Liftoff, seen from above in the early morning light.
Liftoff, National competition, DC. Commission on Arts and Humanities. Dedicated in April 2009, this public piece is located at City Vista Plaza at 5th and K St, NW, in Washington DC. H 20' x 30' x 40'
Fabricated in Ohio the sculpture was transported in sections on two flatbed trucks (Nov 2008).
The piece offers surprise views from all directions. A double seat encourages passers-by to pause and relax, take in the different views, or as a photo opportunity.
Sculpture is lit by small floodlights placed at ends of each of four cross-beams.
The sculpture was inspired by an impressive sky of kites swirling and careening overhead during DC's International Kite Festival which takes place in the Mall during the cherry blossom season. The sculptor was visiting Washington and the jurors, having been selected as a finalist to propose a site specific model for this national competition.
